Fences in weak memory models (extended version)
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a class of relaxed memory models, defined in Coq, parameterised by the chosen permitted local reorderings of reads and writes, and by the visibility of interand intra-processor communications through memory (e.g. store atomicity relaxation). We prove results on the required behaviour and placement of memory fences to restore a given model (such as Sequential Consistency) from a weaker one. Based on this class of models we develop a tool, diy, that systematically and automatically generates and runs litmus tests. These tests can be used to explore the behaviour of processor implementations and the behaviour of models, and hence to compare the two against each other. We detail the results of experiments on Power and a model we base on them.

What’s Decidable about Weak Memory Models? (Extended Version)
We investigate the decidability of the state reachability problem in finite-state programs running under weak memory models. In [3], we have shown that this problem is decidable for TSO and its extension with the write-to-write order relaxation, but beyond these models nothing is known to be decidable. Moreover, we have shown that relaxing the program order by allowing reads or writes to overta...
متن کاملProperty-Driven Fence Insertion Using Reorder Bounded Model Checking
Modern architectures provide weaker memory consistency guarantees than sequential consistency. These weaker guarantees allow programs to exhibit behaviours where the program statements appear to have executed out of program order. Fortunately, modern architectures provide memory barriers (fences) to enforce the program order between a pair of statements if needed. Due to the intricate semantics...

متن کاملTaming Weak Memory Models
Speculative techniques in microarchitectures relax various dependencies in programs, which contributes to the complexity of (weak) memory models. We show using WMM, a new weak memory model, that the model becomes simpler if it includes load-value speculation and thus, does not enforce any dependency! However, in the absence of good value-prediction techniques, a programmer may end up paying a p...
متن کاملBrief Announcement: Fence Insertion for Straight-line Programs is in P
Relaxed memory models reorder instructions in the interest of performance. However, reordering of instructions can jeopardize correctness and memory fences should be used to preserve specic orders. Programs that carry explicit fences are over-specied as they are tied to specic architectures and memory models and are hence unportable. On the other hand, once the program species the high-leve...
